On behalf of the editorial board of Journal of Conservative Dentistry, office bearers, and members of Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, it gives us an immense sense of pride to share the news that a pioneering member of our fraternity Dr. Rajeeva Shetty, in recognition of yeoman services has been conferred with honoris causa - Doctor of Science by the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, members of Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences on 25 th March 2015.
Dr. Rajeeva Shetty is a disciplined, dignified, and a decent human being. A perfectionist with pragmatic outlook. A rare amalgamation of academic excellence, administrative acumen, and clinical competence. He was born on 25 th April 1933 at tiny village of coastal Karnataka. His primary and secondary education was done at Kundapura. As a school boy, he evinced intense interest in education and learning. Impressed by his performance and passion for learning; the family sent him to Madras for higher education.
He secured his bachelor degree in dentistry from Madras University in 1957; soon after graduation, he joined newly established Government Dental College (GDC) Bangalore as a lecturer. Dr. Shetty was the first dental professional to join the teaching faculty of that institute.
Dr. Shetty with diligence dedication and professional competence became a very popular teacher and his students not only adored him but idealized him. Impressed by his performance and dedication Government of Mysore deputed him for higher education. He secured his master degree in operative dentistry from Bombay University.
After returning from Bombay with master's degree, he was promoted as an assistant professor of operative dentistry. He established the first independent department of operative dentistry and endodontics in Karnataka at GDC Bangalore. Later, he was promoted as professor and head of the department. In the year 1973, he went to USA on a WHO fellowship and secured a certificate in endodontics and pedodontics from the University of Pennsylvania. He was instrumental in starting postgraduate courses in operative dentistry and endodontics. He also guided many postgraduate students in that specialty. In the year 1979, he was promoted as the principal of GCD Bangalore. During his tenure as a principal, he developed the infrastructure of the institution, acquired modern and sophisticated equipment and instrument, and started new postgraduate courses in the different department. Recognizing his administrative capabilities and managerial skills state government elevated him to the post of director of medical education.
Dr. Rajeeva Shetty is the first dental professional to occupy this coveted post. During his tenure, department of medical education witnessed unprecedented progress and development. He retired from the government service in the year 1991 on superannuation. Since then he has been the Director and Consultant Dental Surgeon of Medical and Dental Centre Bangalore. During his 31 years long government service, he also held many prestigious academic positions. He was a member of Dental Council of India, Syndicate member of various universities. Dr. Shetty is associated with various professional bodies in different capacities. He is former president of Federation of operative dentistry in India, fellow-International College of Dentist, member Karnataka dental council. He was invited guest at international congress for dentistry for handicapped at Stockholm at Sweden, WHO regional meet of chief dental officer at Chan mai Thailand, International Dental Conference Bombay and Asia Pacific Congress of dentistry held in New Delhi.
In appreciation to his contribution in the field of dentistry and health services, he has been honored by Government of Karnataka with Rajyotsava award. He was honored by Asia Pacific dental federation for services rendered to operative dentistry, lifetime achievement award by Indian dental association, and also a recipient of Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is an excellent role model for the younger generation of dental and medical professionals.
