Synopsis | | |
Research is the detailed study of a subject, especially to discover new information or reach a new understanding. It is the continual search for truth using the scientific method and a requisite for providing better healthcare. Although research is an essential part of many healthcare institutions and graduate programs, many clinicians lack the important research skills and knowledge required to succeed in their professional and academic careers. Research is generally complex to carry out and requires many diverse skills. While some skills are procedural or organizational in nature, others require strategic and critical thinking. In addition to achieving proficiency in various skills, clinicians must be able to integrate them or fail to produce the desired or intended outcome for their research.
This 1-day course is designed to introduce the core skills and processes needed to carry out good quality research successfully; from research idea conception to research results delivery. Research is of little value unless it is shared with the professional community for the benefit of all. Scientific publications, especially in reputable journals, are the most pragmatic way of communicating research results. Regrettably, scientific writing is not every clinician's favorite activity and getting a paper published can be a very arduous, tedious, and time-consuming procedure. The program is divided into four modules with special emphasis on the seven steps to effective scientific writing and publishing. Writing scientific papers may not be as hard as many people are led to believe. It is the research skill that you can learn and develop with practice, time, and the "write" attitude.
Topics covered in the modules include:
Module 1: Understanding research
- Research Defined
- ASK (Attitude, Skills, and Knowledge) for Research
- The Scientific Method
- Research Process
Module 2: Designing the research plan
- Formulating Research Questions
- Searching the Literature
- Refining the Research Question
- Planning the Study
- Writing the Protocol
Module 3: Implementing the research plan
- Obtaining Ethics Approval and Funding
- Piloting the Methodology and Project Management
- Collecting the Data
- Analyzing the Data
Module 4: Communicating the research results
- Scientific Writing and Publishing
Course objectives
- To understand research and the research process
- To review the scientific method
- To identify good research ideas
- To design a sound research plan
- To implement the research plan efficiently
- To write and publish effectively
Course methods | | |
All modules incorporate eclectic learning methods; including lectures, videos, group discussions, peer-teaching, and practical exercises. The "literature search" and "paper editing" segments are hands-on using computers (please bring your own laptops), giving you the opportunity to undertake a small search and editing exercise during the course.
