The silver the 25 th Federation of Operative Dentistry of India and the 18 th Indian Endodontic Society National Conference was held at Chennai Convention Centre, Chennai, Tamil Nadu from 10 December to 12 December 2010. The conference was well attended by more than 1300 delegates including postgraduates, teaching faculties and practicing endodontists across India.
Five pre-conference courses were conducted at Hotel Quality Inn Sabari, Chennai and 120 delegates participated in the well-crafted and conducted courses. Dr. Aravind Shenoy's contemporary endodontics, Dr. Porous Turner's smile design, porcelain laminate veneers, CAD/CAM, Dr. Vivek Hegde's lasers in conservative and endodontic practice, medical emergencies in dental practice by the American Heart Association and Prof. Dr. M. Prabakaran's radiographic imaging from IOPA to CBCT were well attended and appreciated. For the first time there was a course conducted during the conference by Dr. Cheung Gary SP, from Hong Kong on the usage of microscope for retreatment.
The students' scientific paper presentations were scheduled on 9 December, one day prior to the conference at Sri Ramachandra Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. Around 220 papers were presented from 9 am to 5 pm at five different halls. Around 50 Chairpersons from various colleges across India scrutinized the papers and selected the 40 best papers from each session for presentation at the conference.
The inauguration of the Conference took place on 10 December at 12 noon. The Honorable Minister for Shipping, Government of India, Mr. G. K. Vasan inaugurated the sessions by lighting the lamp and releasing the conference souvenir. Chief patron Dr.Anil Koli, Conference Secretary Dr. Kapil Loomba, FODI President Dr. Anil Chandra, IES president Dr. R.C. Kakkar, FODI Joint Secretary Dr. Mohan B., IES Hon. secretary Dr. K. S. Banga, Organizing Chairman Dr. S. Ramachandran, Organizing Secretary Dr. M. Rajasekaran, and Scientific Committee Chairman Dr. M. R. Srinivasan participated in the inauguration.
The trade fair pavilion was inaugurated after the inauguration of the scientific sessions by Patron Mr. Kanakaraj, Chairman, Jaya Group of Institutions. The response to the trade stalls was huge and over 40 stalls spread over more than 1000 sq. meters in a fully air-conditioned area were well appreciated. Nearly 200 representatives and 35 manufactures across India participated in the fair.
For the first time in the conference, e-posters were introduced, where all 325 posters were presented in digital format. Tabletop clinics were also introduced and many enthusiastic student delegates participated. A quiz was also conducted for the postgraduate students. Around 60 delegate papers were presented and more than 150 renowned academicians chaired various scientific deliberations.
The keynote lectures from four international speakers and eight national speakers were planned in the morning sessions for three days and all the students' presentations were in the afternoon sessions which enabled them to attend the keynote lectures. Prof. Dr. Lakshman Samaranayake, Dean, University of Hong Kong, delivered his lecture on biofilms and endodontics. Dr. Gary L. Unterbrink from Switzerland spoke on mastering the world of composites, Dr. Venkat Canakapalli, from New Zealand delivered a lecture on restorative strategies in endodontics. Dr. Gary Cheung from Hong Kong enlightened the gathering on advancements in NiTi instruments.
The list of eminent national speakers included Dr. D. Kandaswamy from Chennai, Dr. K. K. Wadhwani from Lucknow, Dr. Ida de Noronanah de Ataide from Goa, Dr. Siju Jacob from Bengaluru, Dr. Vimal Sikiri from Amristar, Dr. K. S. Banga from Mumbai, Dr. Ramya Raghu from Bengaluru, Dr. Vivek Hedge from Pune and Dr. B. Suresh from Chennai. The array of speakers enthralled the crowd, and the delegates and postgraduates hugely benefitted. The introduction of swipe cards for the entry and exit and calculation of the CDE points was well appreciated in the conference.
The silver jubilee celebration of the FODI conference took place in the evening of the10 th . All the past and present office-bearers were felicitated in the gathering for their contribution to the growth of the FODI community for the past 25 years. The evening progressed with a cultural program followed by a grand dinner hosted by the head office, FODI.
The Executive Committee meeting and the Annual General Body meeting of the IES was held on Friday,10 December 2010. Dr.Kapil Loomba was elected as president elect.
The Executive Committee meeting and the Annual General Body meeting of FODI was held on Saturday, 11 December 2010. Dr. C. V. Pradeep assumed office as President, FODI at the AGM. Dr. S. Ramachandran was elected as president elect.
A grand gala banquet was arranged at the Chennai Convention Centre with variety entertainment on Saturday 11 December 2010, in the night.
The Conference concluded with the valedictory function, where the prizes for the best papers in the category of Conservative Dentistry, Endodontics and Dental materials, e-posters for each session, tabletop clinics for both sessions and winners of the Quiz were given away. The organizing Committee members who toiled day and night for the success of the conference too were felicitated with mementos. The function ended with the National Anthem.[Additional file 1]
