   Abstract

Background: The Journal of Conservative Dentistry (JCD) has been online since 2008.
Materials and Methods: This paper reviews the publication in this journal over a 5-year period (2011–2015). It assesses the types of articles published, coverage of various types of subjects of endodontics, and conservative dentistry in the journal and explores the authorship patterns in the publication and citation of the journal over this period.
Results and Conclusion: JCD has delivered broad-based, balanced coverage of endodontics and conservative dentistry between 2011 and 2015, with contributions from all over India, as well as abroad. Although a maximum number of articles were from India, the publications from other countries are also on an increase. Thus, the widespread coverage of this journal suggests that JCD has begun to represent the global face of the Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics.

   Introduction Top

In 1998, the Federation of Conservative Dentistry of India issued a journal in the field of conservative dentistry and endodontics in India named “The Journal of Conservative Dentistry (JCD),” to serve as a way for spreading of knowledge in their field. Dr. Vimal Sikri was the first Editor-in-Chief, and under his leadership and guidance, he brought the first seven volumes from 1998 to 2004. Dr. D. Kandaswamy took over as the next Editor-in-Chief from 2005 to 2008. After 2008 to till date, Dr. Gopikrishna has been the Editor-in-Chief and has been entrusted with the responsibility of continuing the good work and growth of journal.[1],[2] In the last 3 years, under his leadership and excellent guidance, the article submission rate increased manifold. This can be attributed to the growing awareness of the presence and quality of our journal which got indexed with PubMed in 2010. To accommodate this spurt in submissions, JCD has increased the number of print pages as well as the number of articles being published.[3]

JCD is a one of a kind journal which publishes articles that cover topics related to conservative dentistry, endodontics and dental materials. JCD shows a great deal of variety in readership that includes academicians, full-time practitioner, residents, students, and scientists.[4] Most of the leading journals put much energy and efforts on trying to quantitatively assess their work through display of publication about authorship and readership statistically so that observer can make out easily. However, to assess journal in various manners such as impact factor, cited half-life, SCImago journal rank, and citation indices, it should be indexed in one or more global publication directories such as PubMed and Scopus.

Till date, no assessment has been carried out about the nature of articles published in JCD. The main purpose of this work is to assess the nature characteristics of JCD articles that show overall pattern of publications.

This paper reviews the publication in this journal over a 5-year period (2010–2015). All the articles were assessed based on the type, number, coverage on various subjects and explored the authorship patterns in the publication.

The analysis of five volumes and twenty-six issues were done from years 2011 to 2015 for number and type of articles (editorial, original article, review article, update article, case reports short communication, authors institution, citation, etc.), using the JCD official website http://www.jcd.org. Furthermore, the same number of articles was analyzed for type of subject. All authors carried analysis independently, and discrepancies were resolved by consensus. The Google Scholar search was limited to articles, without patents, with at least summaries. The article presented briefly below with collected data.

Over this last 5 years period from 2011 to 2015, JCD published 26 issues comprising five volumes. Earlier four issues in each volume but after 2013, six issues published till date. These issues and volumes include a total of 585 submissions with maximum number in the issue of volume 17 of the year 2014 with a total of 138; however, in 2015, the overall number of articles fell in per issue [Table 1].

The journal content includes guest editorial, editorial, original articles, review, case report, and short communication in every issue. Almost in every volume, JCD has covered the topic letter to editor, short communication, conference/convention report, and book review. The total original articles contribution of period 2011–2015 were n = 407 (80.12%) and case report n = 50 (10%). These articles covered all the topics of subject. Review (n = 16) and invited review (n = 9) were analyzed together because of their similarities and comprise 5% of total articles [Table 2].

After assessing all the articles with type of subject, the coverage was found to be remarkably balanced. The journal was able to achieve over a 5-year period given equal weightage with type of subject [Table 3]. In this period, topic on conservative dentistry was covered with 170 articles, endodontics (n = 234), and others (n = 55) each.

Author institution mapping of each articles was assessed country-wise as India and outside India and further author assessment was done with per volume also [Table 4]. The largest number of articles being original articles, reviews, case reports, or others from India only (n = 455) and articles from other countries (n = 107), maximum compromise of original articles only with a few case reports and editorials, reviews, and book reviews. When viewed as whole, maximum contribution in this given period in all types of articles comes from India only and a maximum number of articles are contributed by academic institutes.

Out of 201 citations in 2011, issue 4 showed maximum citations (approximately 36%), followed by issue 2 (approximately 27%). However, in 2012, issue 1 showed maximum citations (approximately 32%). In 2013, there were 85 citations. However, recent volumes (that are 2014 and 2015) showed minimum citations [Table 5].

We have tried assessment of pattern of publication in 5 years period in this official journal of the Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics (IACDE). While the numbers of published articles fell in 2015, an optimal balance has been maintained between the various subspecialties. In spite of the presence of other high impact journals such as Operative Dentistry, Journal of Endodontics, and International Endodontic Journal, JCD also has been able to attract original articles, reviews, cases, and images. Most contributions have come from prestigious academic institutions of the country.[1],[5] While the bulk of articles have been of Indian origin, other countries have been also published.

The frequency with which papers from a given journal are cited is a measure of the academic profile and quality of the journal. The number of journals that cite papers from a given journal reflects the academic profile of the journal, its influence, its impact on some specialties, and its attraction to readers from different fields.

The articles published in JCD provide a complete picture of the dynamic force that IACDE is today. It is a credit to the editorial team to have evolved the journal to provide a platform that encompass a broad spectrum of qualitative research in our field.[6],[7] This study has tried to assess and highlight the publication trends in JCD. However, it has not assessed the department of origin of various authors. It has also listed the institutions of the first authors only, without taking into consideration institutions of work of coauthors, which may have been different in multi-institution submissions.

   Conclusion Top

JCD has published a large number of manuscripts over these 5 years studied (2011–2015). These papers span the whole spectrum of conservative dentistry and endodontics and cover a wide range of topics. Contributions from all parts of the country acknowledge the pan-Indian growth of the specialty. At last, we all authors would like to congratulate and acknowledge the immense work done by the Editor-in-Chief Dr. Gopikrishna and the entire editorial board in bringing out a world class journal for the specialty of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics from India.
