Textbook of Endodontics is an inimitable textbook designed eruditely to meet the requirements of undergraduate students. The book has been edited by Dr. Anil Kohli, Dean at the Faculty of Dentistry, Baba Farid University, Punjab. Honorable President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, officially released the book at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan, New Delhi, in the presence of Honorary Brigadier Dr Anil Kohli, Dr Awasthi, Dr Hari Prakash, Dr Suresh Chandra, Dr Vivek Hegde and Dr Gopi Krishna.

The success of this book has been etched with the perfect amalgamation of the knowledge of many national and international legendary persons. The book has a galaxy of international contributors including Dr. James L Gutmann, Professor Emeritus, Baylors College Of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas USA, Dr. Nair PNR, Senior Scientist at Centre of Dental and Oral Medicine, University of Zurich, Dr. Syngcuk Kim and Dr. Meetu Ralli Kohli, associated with the University of Pennsylvania, USA (Microsurgery), Dr. Andrea Moritz, President der ESOLA, Vienna, Austria and Dr. Anil Kishen, University of Toronto, Canada.

Eminent national contributors include Dr. Gopikrishna V, Dr. Sivapathasundharam B, Dr. Suresh Chandra B, Dr. Majumdar D, Dr. LakshmiNarayanan L, Dr. Carounanidy Usha, Dr. Suresh R, Kundabala M, Dr. Vivek Hegde, Dr. Siju Jacob, Dr. Suma Ballal, Dr. Sanjay Miglani, Dr. Krithika Datta, Dr. Sunitha Raja, and Dr. Abarajithan.

Though there are abundant endodontic textbooks available for undergraduate students, this book gives the reader an advantage of access to information on updated clinical and material aspects of Endodontics. The book is well structured right from Introduction to Endodontics to the various problems encountered during endodontic practice without any insufficiency of information. It has been compiled in a simple, coherent manner with an easily comprehendible design to gain thorough knowledge; and its practical application to accomplish enduring clinical success.

The initial chapters - Introduction, scope and rationale of Endodontics give the reader a brief introduction to the various pulpal and periapical diseases and extensive details about pulpal and periradicular reactions to stimuli. It also explains the inflammatory and vascular change as a consequence to irritants. The chapter on dental pulp is reader-friendly with illustrations and figures. The developments, histological features, theories of sensitivity and age changes of pulp have been adequately explained.

An accurate diagnostic aid is indispensable in any field of medicine. As the axiom "what your mind doesn't know your eyes don't see" denotes, a comprehensive knowledge on diagnosis is vital for a good clinician. The chapter on Diagnosis deals profoundly with the conventional and newer diagnostic aids used in Endodontics.

Even difficult topics like Pathogenesis of pulpal and periapical diseases have been presented in a simple and comprehendible manner. The roles of host defense, molecular mediators in pathogenesis and the microbial and non microbial causes have been dealt with exhaustively; this has not been addressed in the other contemporary text books. Use of lasers forms an important part in the modern endodontic epoch. Adding a chapter exclusively on various Lasers used in Endodontics, their clinical indications and mode of action, helps the undergraduate students gain knowledge and improvise on their clinical work to reach international standards.

One of the imperative factors in determining the prognosis of endodontically treated teeth is the quality [Additional file 1]of final restoration. The schematic diagrams illustrated in the chapter Restorations for endodontically treated teeth manifestly explain the parameters that resist the force acing on root canal treated tooth, the mode of crack propagation, stress distribution factors and the concept of biologic width. The illustration pertaining to the indications of post and core for anterior and posterior tooth is well thought.

Successful Endodontics is possible only when the problems encountered during the procedure are managed immaculately. The chapter Problem solving Endodontics is meticulously dealt with and contains informative illustrations and clinical pictures. The most common errors that can occur during the procedure, methods of prevention and the ways of solving the problems have been explained in a lucid method.

The paradigm shift from conventional to modern Endodontics encompasses the field of Microsurgery. The astute inclusion of a chapter on Microsurgery portrays the diligence of the editor. The concepts of Microsurgery are detailed in an adept manner. The management of isthumus, retro preparation with ultrasonic tips and use of newer materials like MTA have been dealt proficiently.

The inclusion of separate chapters on Intra canal medicament, Microscopes in Endodontics, Pulpotomy and Apexification has helped in greater exposition of information, which has made this compilation complete. Indian Endodontics is getting revolutionized and practice of modern Endodontics is taught throughout the nation. Endodontic care is not only given by specialist but also by general dentists, thus, the knowledge of modern Endodontics has to be imparted to all dental personnel.

In comparison to other existing text books, Textbook on Endodontics has expanded its scope enormously and has profoundly elucidated the newer material and clinical techniques available.

In the words of Clifford J Ruddle: "This textbook is a treasure, and will serve as a beacon of light to brightly illuminate the endless pathway towards endodontic excellence."
